‘Hastings by Candlelight’ – Reflective hologram & mixed media with gold frame – 1690mm x 1380mm
Salt follows Adriano Gemelli’s previous series, Whitewater, continuing his exploration of ethereal and enigmatic works that draw richly from the sea. These new pieces expand on a thematic foundation, evoking a wide array of oceanic references through compositions saturated with colour and intricate design. They suggest influences as diverse as the Baroque, Asian aesthetics, and the Australian landscape—specifically drawn from the Hastings region of the Mornington Peninsula.
In this body of work, Adriano continues to push the boundaries of artistic convention with his distinctive use of materials—hologram, resin, and mixed media—devising conceptual strategies that resist easy classification. These works transcend the traditional borders of painting, sculpture, and drawing. As Gemelli notes, “Art is not what you see, it’s what you realise.”
“My aim,” he explains, “was to create a configuration of medium and technique that allows light to filter through, so the works emit a compositional elegance. The paintings are most successful in the multiplicity of perspectives they offer as the viewer moves around them. The visual tension between hologram, gold, and texture gives rise to opulent material effects—where opacity and translucency, reflection and transparency, coexist.”
